Step inside the massive University Loft Company manufacturing plant and warehouse facility in Greenfield, Indiana, for example, and you’ll see The Toyota Way in action. You’ll notice student furniture assembly “cells”. This is where the student furniture construction magic happens, as furniture components are delivered to one end of the cell and assembled as they move from one station to the next around the cell. Once assembly is complete, the furniture item is inspected and boxed for shipping. If a problem is encountered during production, a flag is raised at the cell, and production stops until a supervisor comes to the cell and the problem is rectified.
